Crosslines director Pam Copling said as the number of first-time visitors to the Crosslines emergency pantry continues to grow, the 37 churches serving as pantry sponsors are struggling to keep up with demand.
That's why Copling is putting out a call for more churches to get involved.
"I know there are a lot of congregations out there," Copling said. "What I hear from so many places, is 'I want to do something to make a difference.' This is their opportunity."
Crosslines, at 627 N. Glenstone Ave., is a project of the Council of Churches of the Ozarks. Individuals and families who live in Greene County may receive emergency food from the pantry -- but only three times a year. On a typical weekday, about 45 families come to get food.
The days when help is most needed are the first Monday of the month, the third Tuesday of the month, and the third Thursday of the month. Extra help would keep the pantry from having to close early, a situation that has happened several days in recent months.
To provide the food for one pantry day, a sponsor
provides approximately $800 in purchased and donated food. In
addition, at least five volunteers in total are needed to work the
five-hour day.
