The children had been asked to bring dolls to church that morning. Riley and Annabelle came down the aisle for the story time, nestled in their owners’ arms. After admiring the dolls, the pastor asked the children how they would feel if someone hit their doll or threw it on the floor and stepped on it. Expressions of horror flashed across the children’s faces. “Would that be okay?” “No!” the children exclaimed in unison.
“You’re right,” the
pastor continued, “because dolls remind us of children and children
are very special to God. They should never, never be hurt.
Somebody hurt a seven-year-old girl in
Seven-year-old Jared came up to the pastor after the service and said, “I think I can give some money to help. I can have a lemonade stand.” The pastor said, “thank you; that would be great!”
A few days later, his mother stood with several other women in the church kitchen. “Boy,” she said, “Jared was really bothered by that sermon last Sunday. He told us he wanted to have a lemonade stand to raise money. When I explained to him that cars drive 50 miles per hour past our house so it wouldn’t be safe to have a lemonade stand there, he burst into tears.”
The women who were gathered in the kitchen all noted Jared’s sensitivity. But one woman heard more. Because many years ago, she had been a victim of child abuse.
