In 1969 Rev. Dorsey Levell met with a local group gathered to discuss the “war on poverty” with a visiting government official from Washington, D.C.  At some point in the meeting the government official made a comment that put a fire in Dorsey’s belly.  The visitor from Washington said that when it comes to fighting poverty, “the churches don’t give a d_ _ _.”

The meeting motivated Dorsey and like-minded souls to establish the Springfield Area Council of Churches to mobilize area churches to fight this “war” together.  The Council began with about $500 in donations, and the first office was in donated space. After outgrowing that space the Council was offered space in Stone Chapel on the Drury University campus.  A long and enduring relationship with Drury University was begun that is still active today.

Today the Council is still fighting against the effects of poverty and now includes nine agencies that specialize in serving the needs of some of the most vulnerable people in the Ozarks.  You can learn more about our agencies and services right here on our website. www.ccozarks.org

Shane Claiborne is an author, activist, and recovering sinner – a Tennessee hillbilly with a love for bluegrass music.  He is a founder of the Simple Way (www.thesimpleway.org) and a long-term partner in the Potter Street Community, an intentional community in Kensington, Philadelphia.  Shane is a board member of the Christian Community Development Association and has helped birth and connect radical faith communities and intentional hospitality houses (newmonasticism.org).  He’s also a little rusty on his circus skills but has been known to do a little juggling and fire breathing on occasion.  Special thanks to Drury University for co-sponsoring Shane Claiborne and welcoming us to their campus.  For your convenience, here is a direct link to a map of the Drury campus: http://www.drury.edu/vtour/.
