In 1969 Rev. Dorsey Levell met with a local
group gathered to discuss the “war on poverty” with a visiting
government official from
The meeting motivated Dorsey and like-minded
souls to establish the Springfield Area Council of Churches to
mobilize area churches to fight this “war” together.
The Council began with about $500 in donations, and the first
office was in donated space. After outgrowing that space the Council
was offered space in Stone Chapel on the
